Best Ship Spare Parts Suppliers in India
India is two markets at once: ship management offices in Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi buying for worldwide tonnage, and the Alang reconditioned trade. Which supplier suits you depends on which of those you are actually in.
Last reviewed · SCARDET Ship Spares
SCARDET Ship Spares supplies marine spare parts across India — JNPT and Mumbai, Mundra, Kandla, Chennai, Kochi, Tuticorin, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia — with genuine OEM and class-approved options quoted together and IRS, ABS, DNV, LR, BV and NK documentation. Indian suppliers with a reconditioned focus include Abhi Marine and NMTPL, both sourcing from the Alang recycling cluster.
What to Look For in India
The criteria below are the ones that decide whether a supplier helps or costs you time. They are also how the suppliers on this page are described.
- 1
Correct customs classification for the vessel's status
Indian customs treats spares differently for foreign-going and coastal vessels, and getting that classification wrong is the single most common reason consignments sit at the port. Documentation should be prepared to match the vessel's status from the outset.
- 2
Honest guidance on new versus reconditioned
Alang makes reconditioned machinery genuinely viable in India. A supplier worth using will tell you when a tested reconditioned unit is sound engineering and when — stretch-critical fasteners, anything going into a unit that already failed — it is not.
- 3
Both coasts covered
West coast through Kandla, Mundra, JNPT and Mumbai; east coast through Chennai, Visakhapatnam, Paradip and Haldia; plus Kochi and Tuticorin in the south. Many suppliers are strong on one coast only.
- 4
Class documentation, supplied before dispatch
Certificates of conformity and material traceability accepted by ABS, DNV, LR, BV, RINA, NK, KR and CCS. The test is whether the paperwork travels with the consignment or has to be chased after the surveyor has already asked for it.
- 5
Genuine and equivalent quoted side by side
A supplier who only quotes one route is deciding for you. The useful answer depends on how close the next survey is and how long the vessel has left in service, so both prices and both lead times should be on the table.
- 6
Honest lead times
Long-lead OEM items — certain liners, crankshaft components, exchange heads — can run to months. A supplier who flags those at quotation stage is worth more than one who discovers them in week three of a docking.

Why Alang shapes the Indian spares market
Alang in Gujarat is the largest ship recycling cluster in the world. Machinery stripped there — gensets, turbochargers, compressors, pumps, complete engines — is overhauled, tested and resold, which is why reconditioned units are a mainstream option in India rather than a last resort. For many components a properly tested reconditioned unit is sound engineering at a fraction of the OEM lead time. For wear parts with tight tolerances, and for stretch-critical fasteners, new remains the right call.
Buying from India for vessels trading elsewhere
A large share of the world's crewed tonnage is managed from Mumbai, Chennai and Kochi. The purchase happens in India; the vessel might be in the Gulf, in Asia or crossing the Atlantic. That makes delivery reach more important than local stock — the useful question is whether the supplier can get the part to the vessel wherever it is, not whether they hold it in Mumbai.
Dry dock supply at Indian yards
Cochin Shipyard is India's largest, with further capacity at L&T Kattupalli, Mazagon Dock and the west-coast repair berths. Docking work runs to fixed windows, so packages should be quoted against the docking list and timed to the yard schedule rather than shipped piecemeal.
