Marine Air Starter Spare Parts
Rotors, vane sets, turbine wheels, pinion drives, relay valves, bearings and seal kits for vane and turbine air starters on main and auxiliary engines.
An air starter is only asked to work for a few seconds at a time, which is exactly why it gets overlooked until the engine will not turn. Two designs are in service: vane starters, where compressed air drives a slotted rotor carrying sliding vanes, and turbine starters, where air drives a turbine wheel through a reduction gear. Vane starters need a working inline lubricator; turbine starters run oil-free and fail differently. Knowing which one is on the engine changes the whole parts list.
Starting air reaches the starter at around 30 bar from the receivers and is reduced ahead of it, so most faults are in the control line rather than the motor — a relay valve that will not lift, a blocked strainer, a solenoid that has stopped sealing. We supply the motor internals as well: rotors and vane sets, turbine wheels and nozzle rings, pinion and Bendix drive assemblies, bearings, shaft seals, gaskets and complete overhaul kits, for TDI Turbotwin, Gali, IPU, Hanshin and the starters fitted as standard by Yanmar, Daihatsu and Hanshin on their own engines.
What We Supply
- Rotors and sliding vane sets for vane-type starters
- Turbine wheels, nozzle rings and reduction gear sets for turbine starters
- Pinion and Bendix drive assemblies, drive springs and clutch units
- Relay valves, control valves, solenoid valves and strainers
- Bearings, shaft seals, O-rings and complete gasket kits
- Inline lubricators, lubricator elements and air line filters
- Starter housings, end covers and mounting flanges
- Complete exchange starter units where repair is not economic
Air Starter Symptoms and Their Usual Cause
- Starter does not turn at all — relay valve not lifting, or control air not reaching it
- Slow or weak cranking — worn vanes, low receiver pressure or a partly blocked strainer
- Starter runs but the engine does not turn — pinion not engaging, worn drive or damaged ring gear
- Pinion stays engaged after start — weak drive spring or a sticking clutch
- Continuous air leak through the exhaust — worn shaft seal or a vane stuck in its slot
- Loud screech on engagement — pinion and ring gear mismatch or worn teeth
- Vane starter wearing out quickly — lubricator empty, set wrong or fitted with the wrong oil
- Starter overheating — repeated long cranking attempts without the maker's cooling interval
Engine & Equipment Makes We Cover
Marine Air Starter Spare Parts supplied for the makes below, as genuine OEM and as class-approved equivalents — both quoted so you can decide against your survey date rather than guess.
What to Send Us for a Quote
Send the starter make and the model from its own nameplate — not the engine's — plus the serial number where it is still legible, and tell us whether it is a vane or turbine type. A photograph of the starter on the engine resolves most of it, because the mounting flange and pinion module vary within the same model family. If the ring gear has been damaged, say so, so we can quote the pinion to match rather than against the original tooth count.

Marine Air Starter Spare Parts — Common Questions
What superintendents and purchasing teams ask us most about marine air starter spares.
Which air starter makes do you supply spare parts for?
TDI Turbotwin, Gali, IPU and Hanshin, plus the starters fitted as original equipment by Yanmar, Daihatsu, MAN B&W, Wärtsilä, Sulzer, MAK, Akasaka and Himsen on their own engines. We supply genuine and class-approved equivalents and quote both.
What is the difference between a vane and a turbine air starter?
A vane starter uses compressed air to drive a slotted rotor carrying sliding vanes and needs an inline lubricator to survive. A turbine starter drives a turbine wheel through a reduction gear and runs oil-free. They share almost no internal parts, so the type has to be established before anything is quoted.
My air starter turns but the engine does not. What is wrong?
The motor is working and the drive is not. Usually the pinion is failing to engage — a worn Bendix drive, a weak drive spring, or damage to the flywheel ring gear teeth. Inspect the ring gear before fitting a new pinion, because a damaged gear will destroy the replacement.
Why do the vanes wear out so quickly?
Almost always lubrication. A vane starter depends on an inline lubricator delivering the correct oil at the correct rate; an empty or wrongly set lubricator will take a vane set out in a fraction of its life. Check the lubricator before fitting new vanes or the new set goes the same way.
Do you supply complete exchange air starters?
Yes, where a repair is not economic or the schedule will not allow one. We quote the overhaul kit and the complete unit side by side with their real lead times so you can decide against your docking or survey date.
What documentation comes with air starter parts?
The starting air system is a class item, so parts are supplied with certificates of conformity and material traceability accepted by ABS, DNV, LR, BV, RINA, NK, KR and CCS, prepared before dispatch.
