Marine Air Starting System Spares
Cylinder-head starting air valves, distributors, master valves, air shut-off valves, flame arrestors, bursting discs and receiver mountings.
The starter motor is one component in a system, and most failures to start are somewhere else in it. Air leaves the receivers at around 30 bar, passes the master starting valve, and the distributor times it to the individual cylinder-head starting valves — on a large two-stroke, directly onto the piston crown. A single starting air valve leaking past its seat will heat the starting air line, and a leaking valve on a bunkering engine is how starting air line explosions begin, which is why the flame arrestor and the bursting disc are surveyed items rather than optional fittings.
We supply the system rather than only the motor: cylinder-head starting air valves and their seats, springs and spindles, distributor assemblies and their control air pipework, master and automatic valves, non-return and reduction valves, air shut-off valves, flame arrestors, bursting discs, receiver mountings, drain traps and relief valves. The air starter itself is covered on its own page.
What We Supply
- Cylinder-head starting air valves, seats, spindles, springs and sealing rings
- Starting air distributors, timing discs and control air pipework
- Master starting valves, automatic valves and slow-turning valves
- Air shut-off valves and emergency engine shutdown valves
- Non-return valves, reduction valves and relief valves
- Flame arrestors and bursting discs for the starting air line
- Air receiver mountings — stop valves, drain traps, relief valves, gauges
- Starting air pipework, flexible hoses, gaskets and O-ring kits
Starting Air System Symptoms and Their Usual Cause
- Starting air line running hot — a cylinder-head starting valve leaking past its seat, find it before it ignites
- Engine turns but will not fire on air — distributor timing out, or control air not reaching it
- One cylinder not taking air — that cylinder's starting valve stuck or its control line blocked
- Receiver pressure falling with the engine stopped — master valve or a non-return valve passing
- Bursting disc ruptured — treat as a starting air explosion until proved otherwise, inspect every valve
- Slow turning not engaging before start — slow-turning valve or its interlock faulty
- Water carried over from the receivers — drain traps not operating, check before it reaches the valves
- Engine will not shut down on overspeed — air shut-off valve seized or its control air lost
Engine & Equipment Makes We Cover
Marine Air Starting System Spares supplied for the makes below, as genuine OEM and as class-approved equivalents — both quoted so you can decide against your survey date rather than guess.
What to Send Us for a Quote
Send the engine make, full type designation and cylinder count, and tell us which part of the system you are working on — the cylinder-head valves, the distributor or the receiver mountings. Starting air valve dimensions change across engine revisions sharing one model name, so the engine serial number matters here more than usual. If a bursting disc has gone, say so: we quote the disc with the valve overhaul rather than on its own, because a ruptured disc means something upstream let hot gas into the line.

Marine Air Starting System Spares — Common Questions
What superintendents and purchasing teams ask us most about starting air system spares.
Why is my starting air line hot?
A cylinder-head starting air valve is leaking past its seat and letting combustion gas back into the line. It is the precursor to a starting air line explosion. Identify the cylinder, overhaul or replace that valve, and inspect the flame arrestor and bursting disc before starting again.
What is the difference between this and the air starter page?
The air starter is the motor that turns small and medium engines through a pinion. This page covers the system that supplies and controls starting air — receivers, master valve, distributor and the cylinder-head valves that admit air directly onto the piston on large engines.
Do you supply starting air valves for two-stroke engines?
Yes — valves, seats, spindles, springs and sealing rings for MAN B&W, Wärtsilä and Sulzer low-speed engines, as genuine and as class-approved equivalents, quoted side by side with their real lead times.
What is the air shut-off valve for?
It cuts the engine's combustion air supply to stop it when normal fuel shutdown will not — an overspeed on a runaway engine drawing combustible vapour through the intake. It is a safety device and a surveyed item, and it needs exercising rather than only inspecting.
Are flame arrestors and bursting discs required?
They are fitted to the starting air line precisely because leaking starting valves can ignite oil mist in it. Both are surveyed items on most classed vessels; replace a ruptured disc only after finding what caused it.
What documentation comes with starting air system parts?
Certificates of conformity and material traceability accepted by ABS, DNV, LR, BV, RINA, NK, KR and CCS, prepared before dispatch so they are with the parts at survey rather than after it.
