Hydraulic & Spring Starter Spare Parts
Starter motors, accumulators, hand pumps, recoil springs, pinions and seal kits for hydraulic and spring starting on emergency and lifeboat engines.
Hydraulic and spring starters exist for the moment there is no starting air and no battery — the emergency generator that has to come up on a dead ship, the lifeboat engine that must start by hand after months on the davits. Neither draws on the vessel's air system, which is the whole point of fitting them, and both are tested far more often than they are used.
A hydraulic starter stores energy in a gas-charged accumulator that is topped up by an engine-driven pump, an electric pump or a hand pump, then releases it through a hydraulic motor onto the ring gear. A spring starter stores it mechanically: a handle winds a heavy clutch spring and a trigger releases it in one turn. The failure modes follow the storage method — accumulators lose nitrogen pre-charge, spring starters fail at the pawl and the recoil spring. We supply the motors, the storage side and the drive end for both.
What We Supply
- Hydraulic starter motors and complete exchange units
- Accumulators, bladders and nitrogen pre-charge kits
- Hand pumps, engine-driven charging pumps and electric charging pumps
- Relief valves, isolating valves, non-return valves and pressure gauges
- Spring starter clutch springs, recoil springs and pawl assemblies
- Winding handles, ratchets and trigger mechanisms
- Pinion and Bendix drive assemblies for both starter types
- Hydraulic hoses, fittings, O-rings and complete seal kits
Hydraulic and Spring Starter Symptoms
- Hydraulic starter cranks slowly or stops short — accumulator has lost its nitrogen pre-charge
- Accumulator will not hold pressure — ruptured bladder, or a leaking non-return valve letting it drain back
- Hand pump takes far more strokes than it used to — worn pump seals or an internal leak past the relief valve
- Hydraulic motor turns but the engine does not — pinion not engaging or ring gear damage
- Oil weeping at the motor shaft — shaft seal, usually after long periods of standing
- Spring starter will not hold the wind — pawl worn or the ratchet not latching
- Spring starter releases weakly — fatigued clutch spring, replace rather than re-tension
- Handle kicks back during winding — trigger mechanism or ratchet failing, stop immediately
Engine & Equipment Makes We Cover
Marine Hydraulic & Spring Starter Spare Parts supplied for the makes below, as genuine OEM and as class-approved equivalents — both quoted so you can decide against your survey date rather than guess.
What to Send Us for a Quote
Tell us whether it is hydraulic or spring, and send the starter's own nameplate rather than the engine's. For hydraulic systems give us the accumulator size and its stamped pre-charge pressure — the pre-charge is the most common cause of a weak crank and the cheapest thing to put right. For spring starters, say whether the fault is in the winding side or the release side, because the pawl, ratchet and clutch spring are quoted separately.

Marine Hydraulic & Spring Starter Spare Parts — Common Questions
What superintendents and purchasing teams ask us most about hydraulic and spring starter spares.
When is a hydraulic or spring starter used instead of air?
Where starting must not depend on the vessel's air system or batteries — emergency generators that have to come up on a dead ship, lifeboat and rescue boat engines, and some emergency fire pumps. Class requires an independent means of starting for those duties.
My hydraulic starter cranks slowly. What is the usual cause?
Nitrogen pre-charge in the accumulator, almost every time. The accumulator stores the energy; once the pre-charge has bled away it cannot deliver the volume quickly enough to turn the engine. Check the stamped pre-charge pressure before condemning the motor.
Can a spring starter's clutch spring be re-tensioned?
No. A fatigued clutch spring is replaced, not adjusted — re-tensioning a spring that has already lost its characteristic gives an unreliable start on a machine that exists precisely for when nothing else works.
Which hydraulic and spring starter makes do you supply?
IPU, TDI Turbotwin, Kinetic Starting Systems, Starting Industrial, Gali and Kocsis, plus the hydraulic components from Parker and Bosch Rexroth and the starters fitted as original equipment by Yanmar, Daihatsu, Cummins and Caterpillar.
Do you supply complete starter units or parts only?
Both, quoted side by side. On a starter that has been standing for years a complete exchange unit is often faster and no dearer than a seal kit plus the labour, and we will say which way the numbers fall rather than default to the parts list.
What documentation comes with emergency starting equipment?
Certificates of conformity and material traceability accepted by ABS, DNV, LR, BV, RINA, NK, KR and CCS. Emergency starting arrangements are surveyed items, so the paperwork travels with the consignment rather than following it.
