Marine Turning Gear Spare Parts
Motors, worm and wheel sets, pinions, clutches, limit switches and interlocks for main and auxiliary engine turning and barring gear.
Turning gear is used before every start and after every shutdown, and it is the one piece of machinery whose failure can be catastrophic in a way nobody notices until the engine is started. The interlock that prevents starting while the gear is engaged is the critical part: an engine started on the barring gear destroys the gear, the pinion and often the flywheel ring gear with it. A limit switch that has stopped proving disengagement is not a minor defect.
We supply the electric turning gear motor, the worm and wheel set that gives the reduction, the pinion that meshes with the flywheel, the engaging clutch and lever, and the limit switches and interlock wiring that keep the whole thing safe. Wear is usually in the worm wheel and the pinion teeth, both of which should be inspected together — replacing one against a worn mate shortens the life of the new part.
What We Supply
- Electric turning gear motors and gearbox assemblies
- Worm shafts, worm wheels and reduction gear sets
- Pinions and pinion shafts meshing with the flywheel ring gear
- Engaging clutches, levers, forks and detent mechanisms
- Limit switches, proximity switches and interlock components
- Bearings, bushes, shaft seals and gasket sets
- Brakes, couplings and shear pin protection devices
- Flywheel ring gear segments where the maker supplies them separately
Turning Gear Symptoms and Their Usual Cause
- Engine cannot be started — interlock still proving the gear engaged, check the limit switch before bypassing anything
- Gear will not engage fully — worn clutch fork or detent, or pinion and ring gear teeth already damaged
- Motor runs but the engine does not turn — sheared pin, worn clutch or stripped worm wheel
- Noisy or juddering turning — worn worm wheel running against a worn pinion, inspect both
- Gear disengages under load — weak detent spring or a worn engaging lever
- Turning gear motor tripping — jammed engine, a seized bearing, or the motor itself at fault
- Oil leaking from the gearbox — shaft seal, usually after the gear has stood engaged for a long lay-up
- Interlock proving disengaged when it is not — the most dangerous fault on this list, stop and prove it manually
Engine & Equipment Makes We Cover
Marine Turning Gear Spare Parts supplied for the makes below, as genuine OEM and as class-approved equivalents — both quoted so you can decide against your survey date rather than guess.
What to Send Us for a Quote
Send the engine make and type designation, and a photograph of the turning gear on its mounting — the gearbox and motor are frequently a different make from the engine and the plate on the gearbox is what identifies them. Tell us whether the fault is mechanical or in the interlock circuit. If the pinion is worn, inspect the flywheel ring gear at the same time and tell us what you find, because fitting a new pinion against a worn ring gear simply wears the new one.

Marine Turning Gear Spare Parts — Common Questions
What superintendents and purchasing teams ask us most about turning gear spares.
What does turning gear do?
It rotates the engine slowly for inspection, maintenance and pre-start checks, and keeps a hot engine turning after shutdown so the shaft does not bend. It is engaged through a pinion onto the flywheel and must be fully disengaged, and proved disengaged, before starting.
The engine will not start and the turning gear is disengaged. Why?
The interlock is still proving it engaged — usually a limit switch or proximity switch that has failed or shifted on its bracket. Prove the gear is mechanically clear, then repair the switch. Bypassing the interlock to get a start is how flywheels and gearboxes are destroyed.
Should the pinion and worm wheel be replaced together?
Inspect them together, and replace the worn pair rather than one against the other. A new pinion running against a worn worm wheel or a worn ring gear takes on the old wear pattern and fails early.
Do you supply the turning gear motor as well as the gearbox parts?
Yes — electric motors, gearbox assemblies, worm and wheel sets, pinions, clutches and the switchgear. The motor is often a standard marine electric motor, which we also supply as bearings, rewinds or a complete replacement.
Which engines do you cover?
MAN B&W, Wärtsilä, Sulzer, MAK, Yanmar, Daihatsu, Hanshin, Akasaka, Himsen, Hyundai, Doosan and Mitsubishi, as genuine and class-approved equivalents, both quoted with their real lead times.
What information do you need to quote turning gear parts?
The engine make and type designation, plus the plate on the turning gear itself — the gearbox is often a different maker from the engine. A photograph of the unit on its mounting usually settles the rest.
